Playa Hermosa South surf guide

Playa Hermosa South is known as one of the more consistent beach breaks in Costa Rica. It features about four miles of stunning black sand and has a pretty deep offshore area. This spot picks up swell from various directions, including the South, South-Southwest, and West. While it can get pretty crowded at the best peaks, there's plenty of room to find your own wave along its stretch. Access is straightforward, just a two-hour drive from the airport, with parking available near several local spots.

The surf here can range in size from about 5 to 9 feet (1.5 to 2.7 meters) and is best for intermediate and expert surfers. The waves tend to break over sand, forming lefts and rights that can get fun. The beach is most favorable during mid to high tide, and when the swells are firing, it can be quite powerful. On solid south swells, you may encounter heavy A-frames that offer challenging rides. Keep in mind that once the size goes beyond double overhead, it can often close out, leading to some tough paddling and possible board breaks.

The wind typically blows in from the northeast, which is ideal for optimal conditions. Surfers often use shortboards, fish, or guns depending on the swell and their own skill level. While the north end of Playa Hermosa has the best sandbanks, moving south toward Tulin, there's a popular sandbar that works well on lower tides with more exposure to west swells. It’s a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and respect the local vibe, as it can be a bit intense sometimes.
