Playa Norte surf guide

Playa Norte is a popular surf spot, especially during the summer when lots of weekend visitors come down from Lima. Located in an area where you're likely to share the waves with other surfers, this beach features a mix of boulders and sand, which can create some interesting shapes. However, be prepared for it to get crowded on busy days. While the waves here can be a bit short and better suited for bodyboarding, there's still potential for some decent rides, especially when the conditions align.

The surf at Playa Norte works best with a SouthWest swell, but it can handle swells coming from the South and West as well. Wave heights around 3 feet (about 0.9 meters) are pretty manageable here. You'll find both lefts and rights, with the rights on the north end generally being the better option, particularly when the push comes in. The beach tends to close out quickly with larger swells, and there are often short barrels to catch if you're in the right spot. Just keep in mind that the bottom is rocky, so watch your step.

This spot is definitely more suited for intermediate surfers, as beginners might find the conditions a bit tough. The rocks can be a challenge, with shells and urchins around, plus getting out the back can be tricky, especially when the surf is bigger. The preferable wind direction is from the east, and you can surf during low, mid, or high tide. If you're looking for more technical rides, the nearby El Paso offers powerful rights over boulders, but it can be punishing.
