Pointe de l'Or surf guide

Pointe de l'Or is a surf spot located near the popular kiteboarding camps in the Dakhla region. It's known for its extensive sandy beach, making it a convenient spot for surfers looking for some waves. The area offers a mix of scenery with a huge beach to the north that extends up to the cliffs, creating a nice backdrop while you're catching some surf.

The surf here can be quite variable. The optimal swell direction is from the Northwest, but it can also handle swells from the Southwest and North. The beach break generally produces waves that range from around 0.3 meters (1 ft) to about 2.4 meters (8 ft). Smaller swell sizes are preferable, as conditions can get challenging above head high. The waves can break both left and right over sand, and itโ€™s best to hit the water during low to mid tide, although high tide can work too. Just keep in mind that the winds can often mess things up, especially with cross or onshore conditions. Also, the point has a sketchy right side that deals better with bigger swells, but folks often find better waves elsewhere.

It's worth noting that currents can be strong, so make sure to pay attention to that when you're out there. Getting to Pointe de l'Or usually requires a 4WD because of the deep soft sand, and itโ€™s not uncommon for vehicles to get stuck. If you're a beginner, this spot can be a good place to practice, especially with the more forgiving smaller waves. Just take care when the surfers are out, and be aware of your surroundings.
