Poipu Outer Reef is a surf spot located straight out from Kiahuna Beach, offering surfers a heavy left barrel over very shallow reef. It's known to be safer during high tide. While Poipu Outer Reef can get really good, there are also other mellower spots nearby, like Lemon Drops and Waiohai. If you head west past Poipu, you’ll find more surf spots like PKs, Centers, Heroins, and Acid Drop. Just keep in mind that all these waves can be pretty dangerous due to the shallow reef bottom.

The surf here can handle swell sizes ranging from 5 ft to 10 ft (about 1.5 m to 3 m) and can break left and right over rock, coral, or lava. The best swell directions are from the Southeast to Southwest, with occasional wrapping from the WNW. It's primarily a summer spot but you might catch some rare winter swells. The ideal wind comes from the North to Northeast, and a mid to high tide works best. Make sure you're up for a good paddle, as getting out there can be a long haul, especially with some tricky currents at times.

Crowds are usually on the lighter side, but expect a good number of surfers when the waves are firing. It's important to show respect and maintain a humble attitude with the locals. Keep in mind that the reef and occasional sharks are present, so be cautious out there. In the summer, you can consistently find good conditions, while spring and autumn also offer decent surf. Make sure to bring your shortboard or bodyboard to make the most of what Poipu Outer Reef has to offer.
