Poneloya surf guide

Poneloya is a surf spot located in Nicaragua, popular among surfers looking for a less crowded experience. It's part of a stretch that includes Las Penitas, offering a mix of beach breaks. While it doesn't pick up as much swell as some of the more southern spots, it still has its moments, particularly when conditions align. The beach is sandy, making it a decent spot for various surfing levels.

The waves here are mainly beach breaks, breaking over sand. Poneloya works best with south to southwest swell directions, and it can handle swell sizes starting from around 1ft (0.3m). When the swell is on, you can find both left and right waves. It's worth noting that the spot has a moderate current, which can lead to some heavy rips and close-outs, especially when the swell gets bigger. The best conditions generally occur with northeast winds and can be surfed during low, mid, and high tides. This makes it quite beginner-friendly when the waves are smaller and the winds calm.

Poneloya tends to be less surfed despite having hosted competitions in the past. It's a great option if you're looking for some space in the water. The beach might feel a bit empty, but that can be a nice break from the busier surf spots further down the coast.
