Ponta Paul is a surf spot located at the very northern end of Paul do Mar. It’s not a well-known spot and sees very few surfers, often due to its high danger factor. The wave itself looks tempting from the coastal road, but it can be deceptive. When it does break, it can be fast and hollow, making for some intense conditions.
The wave typically works best with a north-west swell and can handle sizes up to 10 feet (about 3 meters). It breaks over boulders and produces a right point wave that can throw some impressive barrels, especially on bigger swells. However, paddling out can be a serious challenge since it starts off with a freight train-like pace and doesn't hold back. Low to mid tides are the best times to hit it, and this spot is really for experts only.
Because only a few people have surfed here, the lineup is usually pretty empty, which might be appealing if you want to avoid crowds. However, with the high risk involved, you definitely need to know what you're doing before taking on Ponta Paul. It’s a spot with a reputation for close calls, so be prepared and know your limits.
