Overview
Ponte Vedra is a secluded 10-mile stretch of coast just south of Jacksonville Beach. Itโs mostly beachbreak and shorebreak over sand, with lefts and rights. The break can shift over the years between an outside low-tide setup and an inside high-tide shorebreak, depending on storms, northeasters, and hurricanes.
When It Works
Ponte Vedra is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It needs some swell angle to be any good, with swell directions from south to north and south as the optimal direction. A solid south hurricane swell or winter north to northeast swell can get the outside coquina shelf breaking.
Fall, winter, spring, and hurricane season are the main seasons. Consistency is average, so itโs not always on.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is southwest. Low to mid tide is the main window, and a rising tide is better. Low tide, either incoming or outgoing, can produce good peaks and fast walls.
Local Tips
Crowds are moderate: it can get crowded, but there is often room to spread out. The lineup atmosphere is low key.
Shortboards, funboards, longboards, and fish can all work here. Itโs listed for beginners, though paddling can get challenging when the surf is bigger.
Watch for sharks, jellyfish, jetskis, and murky water from estuary runout. Some of the murk is natural tannins from local rivers.
Access
Park and walk. There is a large car park with free parking, but theft is a known problem, so donโt leave valuables visible.
