Populars, or Pop's, is a well-known surf spot located just west of Canoes, right in front of the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. This area features a long, curving reef that creates a peak with a decent right that can peel nicely down the line, along with some shorter, softer lefts. The crowd can be pretty heavy due to its popularity, especially when a good swell rolls in.
The surf here is generally user-friendly, making it suitable for intermediate surfers. It works best on a low to medium tide and can handle swell sizes from about 4 to 8 feet (1.2 to 2.4 meters). The best swell directions are from the Southeast and Southwest, with a preference for offshore winds from the Northeast. When conditions are right, Populars can deliver some fun rights and occasionally bowl up for a solid ride, especially during autumn and summer when swells are more consistent. Keep in mind that the paddling can be a bit of a trek, but it’s manageable once you’re out there.
As for the environment, Populars can become quite lively when there's a solid south swell, attracting a mix of surfers. The reef is the main feature here, but be careful of the large crowds and the occasional inexperienced surfer drifting into your line. This spot is best suited for shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, and bodyboards, depending on your style and preference.
