Port Robinson surf guide

Port Robinson is a surf spot located after a bit of a trek from the parking area. It takes about a 10-minute walk down a farm track to reach the beach, so be prepared for that. It’s not the most crowded place, which can be a plus if you’re looking for some space to ride waves. The spot works best under specific conditions, making it a bit inconsistent, but when it’s on, you can find some decent surf.

The waves at Port Robinson are mainly right-handers breaking over boulders. It handles swell sizes around 4ft (1.2m) and prefers a Southeast swell direction. You’ll find the best surfing when the swell is coming from the Southeast or South. For the best conditions, aim for mid to high tide and a west wind. Just a heads up, this spot is suited for competent surfers, so it's mainly for experts looking to challenge themselves.

For getting to Port Robinson, you can drive from Christchurch on State Highway 1, then make your way through Domett and Hurunui Mouth Road, or go through Cheviot and Gore Bay Road. If you're planning to take a break after surfing, there are some camping grounds in Gore Bay for staying overnight. Just make sure you're ready for the walk down to the beach!
