Port Waikato Left surf guide

Port Waikato Left is a surf spot located at the south end of Sunset Beach, right on the south side of the Waikato River mouth. It’s a place where the beach meets some rugged headland cliffs, offering a left-hand point break that’s particularly popular with more skilled surfers. The area can be pretty remote, so it’s a good idea to be prepared when you head out here.

This spot works best with a southwest swell, handling wave sizes around 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can be affected by uneven reef and sand. The lefts that break here can deliver powerful walls and hollow sections, especially when the sand joins up with the rocky fingers below. There are also transient peaks along the beach break, but keep in mind that the onshore winds often kick in by late morning, which can mess with the conditions. It's recommended to surf during low to mid tide for the best waves. Only advanced to expert surfers should take this spot on, as the entry off the rocks can be tricky.

When planning your session, note that the preferable wind direction is from the east. Given the local vibe, it’s good to be mindful of the locals here; they can be a bit territorial. So be respectful and ready to share the waves. Just remember, this spot is mainly suitable for experienced surfers due to its unique challenges.
