Port Waikato Left is located at the southern end of Sunset Beach, just south of the Waikato River mouth. It offers a left-hand point break that breaks over uneven reef and sand. To get there, you’ll need to navigate some roads from Auckland, turning onto smaller roads until you reach Maunsell Road leading down to the beach. It’s worth noting that access can be a bit tricky, so be prepared for a bit of a walk to reach the point.
The surf here is generally best with a southwesterly swell, which works well ranging from about 0.6 meters (2 ft) and handles a variety of swell directions including north and southwest. The waves can produce powerful walls and hollow sections, especially when the sand aligns with the rocky fingers. You can find transient peaks on the beach break, but they tend to fade out as onshore winds kick in late morning. The spot favors lefts, so if you're looking for a ride, that’s where it’s at.
This spot is definitely for advanced to expert surfers only. The entry off the rocks can be sketchy, and the locals aren't really welcoming to newcomers. It's best to keep your skills sharp and your instincts keen when hitting this break. It works well on low, mid, and high tides, but knowing when to paddle out can make a big difference.
