Potato Point is a chill surf spot located in a laid-back area that usually sees a low crowd factor. The beach is pretty inviting for surfers of all levels, and there's a mix of different waves that can work in various conditions. The environment is relaxed, making it a solid choice if you want to enjoy some time in the water without the hustle and bustle of more crowded beaches.
The surf at Potato Point mainly features beach breaks that benefit from sand buildup along the headland. The rights on the north side often deliver the best rides, especially when the swell is hitting from the east or the northeast. You can find decent waves here, with sizes starting from about 0.3 meters (1 ft) up to bigger swells. Jemisons Left can be pretty fun, getting a bit sucky and holding solid waves when there's a good double overhead swell with a north angle. If you're looking for some variety, there’s also a bonus right-hander at Blackfellows, which is a couple of headlands to the north. It works best with the same sand conditions and can give you longer, point-style waves.
This spot is good for beginners as it offers a range of waves for different abilities. You can surf Potato Point on low, mid, or high tides, and the preferred wind direction is from the west, which helps keep the conditions favorable. Overall, it’s a pretty versatile spot, especially when you want to escape the crowds and score some fun waves.
