Pouawa Beach surf guide

Surf: Pouawa Beach is part of a marine reserve and popular summer camping spot. Waves are transient over the sandbars and scruffy reef outcrops, with a bit of NE wind protection up by the rivermouth. Directions: From Gisborne town centre drive east on Gladstone Road, onto Wainui Road, State Highway 35, towards Wainui. Continue past Wainui on Moana Road and onto Whangara Road. At Pouawa cross the Tarewarewa Stream and turn right onto the gravel road down to the beach. Environment: Good place to snorkel and see the protected sea-life.
