Praia Do Guincho surf guide

Praia Do Guincho is a popular surf spot located close to Lisbon, making it a go-to for many local surfers when the city breaks aren’t delivering. This long and open beach is rarely flat, which is a definite plus for surfing throughout the year. While it also attracts windsurfing enthusiasts during the summer months, its surfable conditions and powerful waves keep surfers coming back. Accessing the beach is relatively easy with roadside parking available, and it’s usually pretty busy on weekends and peak times.

The surf here can handle a variety of swell sizes, ranging from about 0.6 meters (2 ft) to up to 2.4 meters (8 ft). It works best when the swells come from the NorthWest, SouthWest, or West directions. Lower to medium tides are preferable for catching those long, reeling lefts and rights that can form around shifting sandbanks. The waves break over sand and can be suitable for various skill levels - from beginners to experts. Keep in mind, the conditions can get quite intense with powerful swells and strong rip currents, especially when the waves are above head high.

Typically, the best surf season runs from September to November and March to May. When it comes to board types, you can use anything from shortboards to longboards, funboards, fish, bodyboards, or even kiteboards, depending on your preference. If you’re planning on heading there, check the wind directions; the best ones are from EastNorthEast to SouthEast. Just be prepared for crowds, as it attracts plenty of surfers, especially on good days!
