Praia do Sul surf guide

Praia do Sul is located in a sheltered corner, making it a potential go-to spot when bigger north or northwest swells are rolling in. Unlike some other beaches, you might find this spot working while others are flat. The best waves here are a right-hander that breaks off the headland, but this wave really only shows up when the conditions are significant. In smaller swells, the beach offers a few peaks, but they're not the best quality.

The surf at Praia do Sul can handle swell sizes from about 1.2 meters (4 ft) to 2.4 meters (8 ft), with the most favorable breaks occurring during winter. The waves break over sand, rocks, and are a mix of point, beach, and reef breaks. The preferred wind directions are from the eastern quadrants, like East, East-SouthEast, and South-East. Tides work best at low to mid and mid to high, offering a decent variety for different skill levels. While beginners can find some easier spots during smaller conditions, the main draw here is really for intermediates and experts, especially when the waves are firing. Remember, during the bigger days, it can get heavy and might not be the safest option for less experienced surfers.

Access to the beach is pretty straightforward with a car park available at the southern end. On most days, you can expect it to be fairly quiet, especially when other surf spots are working. However, when conditions are right, the point can draw a crowd. Keep an eye out for rocks on the inside when it's big, as they can be a hazard.
