Praia Guincho is a well-known surf spot located near Cascais, just a bit north of Lisbon. While it gets a lot of attention for windsurfing, it’s also one of the better beachbreaks in the Lisbon area for surfers. The atmosphere here can be lively, especially in the summer, with plenty of beachgoers and surfers sharing the waves.
The surf at Praia Guincho can be quite good, mainly when the conditions align. The optimal swell direction is from the Northwest, and the spot handles swells as small as 2 feet (about 0.6 meters). You'll find beach waves breaking over sand, and both left and right waves are available. Low to mid-tides work best for catching those wedgy, powerful rights that break off the cliffs at the northern end. However, it does get blown out easily, so keep an eye on the wind, which is best from the east.
This spot is friendly to beginners, making it a decent choice for those who are just starting out. Even when the surf isn't at its best, it's still a great place to hang out and enjoy the ocean vibes. Just remember that when the waves are on, it can get crowded, so be prepared to share the lineup with other surfers.
