Puaena Point surf guide

Puaena Point, often referred to as Puni's, is a surf spot located near Haleiwa. It's known for its unique setup and decent waves that cater mainly to intermediate surfers. The break is situated close to the Haleiwa boat channel, providing some protection from the more unruly north swells and the gusty northeast trade winds.

The right waves at Puaena Point break into the channel and can offer some fun rides, especially when the swell is coming from the northwest. The waves typically handle sizes up to about 5 feet (1.5 meters). After crashing on the exposed outside point, the swells filter over an uneven reef that can create some challenging barrels before fading into the deeper channel. While the right break is the more dominant option, you might find some lefts when the swell shifts to the west. Low to mid tide is generally the best time to hit the water here.

Be aware that the rip can be pretty strong at times, so it's important to keep that in mind while you're out there. Also, sharks are known to patrol the harbor entrance, which is something to consider when choosing your session times.
