The rights of Puaena Point (Puni's) break into the Haleiwa boat channel, offering protection from unruly N swells and gusty NE trades. After slamming the exposed outside point, swells filter into a shelf that sucks hard and barrels before letting up and drifting into the deep channel. NW swell and mid tide is best for the dominant right while lefts appear when the swell is more W.

The rip can be nasty and sharks patrol the harbour entrance.
