Publics is a surf spot located on the east flank of Waikiki, known for being one of the more consistent lefts in the area. It's a bit of a trek out to the waves, and you’ll definitely feel the shallow reef beneath you, so be cautious. This place can be pretty crowded, especially when it's waist high (roughly 1.5 meters) or bigger, but if you get out early, you might score some quieter sessions.
This surf spot really shines when the swell comes from the southeast or southwest, handling sizes from 5 feet to 10 feet (1.5 meters to 3 meters). The waves break left over the live coral, which can be tricky. Mid to high tides work best here, as high tide makes the waves safer but less powerful, while low tide can provide some racetracking rides with potential tube sections. Keep in mind that with increased swell, the vibe shifts, and locals begin to take over, so you’ll want to be confident in your skills if you're planning to surf here.
Access to Publics is pretty easy, with parking available at Sans Souci State Recreational Park. If you’re planning to ride different types of boards—shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, or even bodyboards—you’ll find something that suits you here. Just keep in mind, it's best suited for intermediate surfers due to the shallow coral. Overall, it's a fun spot with a lot of potential, just make sure to watch your step—those coral heads can pop up when you least expect it!
