Puerto Caballas surf guide

Puerto Caballas is a remote surf spot that's a bit off the beaten path. Located in a fairly isolated area, it offers a laid-back vibe, making it feel like a hidden gem. The scenery is rugged, and while it may remind you of Chicama, it doesn't quite match up (but who does?). This place can have an empty coastline, which is a plus if you prefer surfing without crowds.

The surf can be decent here, mostly working best with a southwest swell. You'll find that it handles swell sizes from around 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can break over boulders and sand. The waves tend to be a mix of point breaks, with lefts being the main direction. It's best to hit the water during low, mid, or high tide for optimal conditions, with preferable winds blowing from the south. This spot is generally suitable for intermediate surfers, as it mixes steep and flat walls through the sections, but be aware that the two scalloped bays don’t always link up unless there’s a larger swell.

Puerto Caballas is known for exposing surfers to the famous howling afternoon winds of the region, which adds an extra layer of challenge. It’s also a good spot for kiters, so expect some activity on that front. Just be sure to bring everything you might need for a day out, as it’s quite isolated.
