Puerto Caldera surf guide

Puerto Caldera is a surf spot located in Costa Rica that offers some unique surfing opportunities. Situated near a river mouth, it features a mix of reef and sandy breaks. The area can get pretty busy, especially with surfers looking for some fun waves. As with many places, there are local vibes, so it's good to be respectful and enjoy the surf scene.

The surf here is mostly lefts, and it works best on mid to high tides. For those looking for some action, the optimal swell direction is from the southwest, but it can handle southerly and westerly swells too. The waves can range from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) up to larger sizes, and you can find a cool rivermouth bar that can get fast and ripable on big swells. El Hoyo is further west, where you might find some quality jetty wedges, but it needs specific conditions like east winds for the best experience. The north side of the jetty can also throw up a rare barreling left, and down by Punta Corralillos, you have a fun left point that works well at all tides. This spot is generally good for intermediate surfers looking to catch some decent waves.

As with many surfing locations, be prepared for some variability in conditions and wave quality. The best times to surf are when the waves are coming from the right direction, and it's a good idea to keep an eye on the tides. Enjoy your time at Puerto Caldera, and make sure to soak up the experience!
