Punta Ballena surf guide

Punta Ballena is a surf spot located in a scenic area that attracts surfers looking for different kinds of waves. It's known for its long rides, but don't get your hopes too high because the surf can be pretty inconsistent. It’s best suited for intermediate surfers who are ready for a bit of a challenge, especially since the quality can vary from session to session.

The surf here works best with Northwest swells and can also pick up West and North swells. When conditions line up, you can get some nice left-point waves that can give you rides of up to 1 kilometer (about 0.62 miles). Overall, it handles swell sizes around 3 feet (approximately 0.9 meters) and breaks over a mix of uneven reef and sand. The ideal wind direction is Southeast, while the spot can be surfed at low, mid, and high tides. Just keep in mind that sometimes the waves can get crumbly and un-makeable, which can be frustrating.

Getting to Punta Ballena requires a bit of a trek, which might deter some surfers. The walk out to the point can be long, and the spot doesn’t always deliver high-quality waves. If you’re willing to put in the effort and find the right conditions, you might score some decent rides, but it’s definitely a mixed bag.
