Punta Ballenas surf guide

Punta Ballenas is a surf spot located about a 5-minute walk south of Mancora. It’s a left-point break that can pick up a bit more swell when the conditions are right. It’s not as crowded or consistent as some of the more popular spots, making it a good option for those looking to escape the busier waves. This spot is best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers, primarily due to the challenging nature of the break and the sharp rocks nearby.

The wave at Punta Ballenas can be pretty sectiony and messy, especially with swell from the North West or during low tide. It really comes alive with swells from the West and South West and handles sizes around 2 feet (0.6 meters). When the conditions line up, you’ll find it’s faster and hollower compared to the main point in Mancora. The best time to surf here is during mid to high tide with southeast winds, which seem to help the wave shape.

While Punta Ballenas isn’t as famous as Mancora, it’s worth checking out if you’re looking for something different. Just be mindful of the uneven reef that the waves break over; it can catch you off guard if you’re not paying attention. Overall, it’s a solid option for those trying to find a spot that offers a bit more challenge without the crowds.
