Punta Burros surf guide

Punta Burros is a surf spot located about 40 minutes drive from Puerto Vallarta. It's a fun, somewhat soft right-hand reef, with a lower-quality left-hand surf option. The spot is accessible by staying at the nearby Palladium Vallarta Resort, parking along the road and walking in, or hiring a panga from nearby small fishing villages. While it can be a great wave for beginners, the crowds are usually heavy here, making it a bit competitive, so be prepared to share the waves with others.

The surf at Punta Burros works best with south to southwest swells and can handle sizes from around 4ft (1.2 meters) to 12ft (3.6 meters). The waves typically break over a rocky reef, creating both right and left waves. The right-hander is where most of the fun is, especially for those riding longboards, funboards, or fish. The ideal wind comes from the north, and it's best to hit the spot during low to mid tides. Although the paddling can require a little effort, it’s manageable for most surfers from beginner to expert levels.

The crowd factor can be significant since this area is quite popular among both locals and visiting surfers. The locals usually dominate the lineup, but they tend to be friendly, and if you’re respectful, you should be able to catch some waves. The environment here stays relatively clean, and while the reef offers some great surfing, be aware of rocks and urchins while you’re out there.
