Punta del Hidalgo surf guide

Punta del Hidalgo is a surf spot located on the northern coast of Tenerife, Canary Islands. It’s known for its picturesque scenery and generally user-friendly waves. The spot is situated at the edge of Playa de Arenal, where you will find a mix of sand and boulders. It can get busy, especially with the local crew and tourists from nearby Santa Cruz, but it has a laid-back vibe overall. Getting here can be a bit tricky due to parking challenges caused by nearby cliffs, so be prepared for a short walk along the beach from the village.

The waves here typically range from waist to overhead high (around 0.6 to 2.1 meters) and can handle swells from various directions, including North and West. The right-handers offer long, rippable walls while the lefts tend to shorten up but still provide some fun. You’ll often find the swell breaking over a combination of sand and rock, and it’s common to deal with powerful shore breaks. The spot works best on all tides, particularly during low to mid to high tide. It’s suitable for intermediate surfers and can break well at sizes from 2ft to 7ft (approximately 0.6 to 2.1 meters).

For paddling, there are big channels that make it easier to navigate, but keep in mind that the waves can break quite a long way out. The preferred wind directions are East, East-Southeast, and Southeast, which helps to shape the waves nicely. The best time to surf here is generally from October to March during the autumn and winter seasons. Whether you’re on a shortboard, fish, longboard, or bodyboard, you’ll find something to ride here.
