More about Punta Mango surfspot

Punta Mango is the main attraction, an epic right pointbreak peeling over barnacle encrusted cobblestone. With a solid S-SW swell and an incoming tide, hollow racetrack walls deal out juicy barrels to the inevitable crowd of boaters, especially at its ideal size, from headhigh to double overhead.

General: One of El Salvador’s hollower right-hand points when it’s on, Punta Mango is fickle and hard to score perfect, but worth the wait when you do. While the wave used to only be accessible by boat, there is now a 4x4 road to the point, which has increased crowds a bit over the past few years. Located around 40 minutes from Las Flores in an area rich in natural beauty, Punta Mango needs a solid size to move off the rocks and break properly over the cobblestone bottom. If there’s a solid swell running and the more user-friendly points such as Sunzal are getting a bit boring, head to Mango and test your barrel-riding skills. Tides: All tides; best on incoming mid to high tide Size: 4-12 ft.+ Wind: Northerly Swell: S, SW Bottom: Sand/rock Paddling: Like most pointbreaks, there’s a bit of current to deal with, particularly up top where it’s hollow and heavy. Spot Rating: One of El Salvador’s best points when it’s on.

Intermediate to expert

Somewhat remote, so your best option is by boat or 4x4.

March through October. Outside of that, it’s generally flat.

Crowd Factor: Difficult access helps keep crowds from getting out of control, but a wave this good is never empty. Local Vibe: Expect El Salvador’s more talented local surfers to be on it when it’s firing.

It’s possible to drive during the dry season, but the bad roads and thefts make the 30 minute boat ride from El Cuco advisable. There are now surf camps and a hotel at the break not helping with crowds at this medium consistency spot.

There isn’t much around, so the water stays relatively clean, despite its darkish color.

Hollow sections up top, sketchy rocks when the swell is small and right on shore.
