Puri surf guide

Puri is located way up north in Orissa State, known for its surf and also as a pilgrimage site due to the tall Jagannatha Temple, which is one of the most famous temples in India. The beach here offers a long stretch of sand that is perfect for surfing, although it doesn't have the same headlands as other areas. The surf conditions can vary quite a bit, so it’s good to know what to expect before you head out.

The optimal swell direction for Puri is Southeast, but it can also pick up swells coming from the East and South. The beach can handle swell sizes starting from 1ft (0.3m) and above. You’ll find beach breaks with waves that can break left or right, making it a decent spot for both goofy and regular footed surfers. The preferred wind direction is Northwest, which helps keep things cleaner, and the tide can work pretty well at low, mid, or high, so you have options depending on the day. Keep in mind that this spot is more suited for intermediate surfers, as it can get a bit tricky when the conditions get tough.

When the surf is small, you can expect some shorebreak, but as the size increases, the waves turn into more consistent lines of whitewash. However, getting out to the outside peaks can be a workout, especially with the longshore drift that pulls you down the beach. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area and looking for a surf session.
