Quarantines, located west of Portsea out on Point Nepean, is a unique surf spot that can sometimes deliver when other places are less than ideal. It's not always reliable, but on the right day, it can offer some decent waves. The scene here is often quiet, but be ready for a bit of a trek to get to the left line-up, which isn’t particularly friendly for newcomers. Local surfers often boat in when the swell is big and conditions are right, especially during a southeast wind.
The surf at Quarantines is best when the swell is coming from the southwest, though it can also work with south and southeast swells. It handles swell sizes up to about 3 feet (0.9 meters) and breaks over sand, creating thick, bowly lefts that roll down the sandbar next to Corsair Rock. Low to mid-tide is generally the way to go for the best conditions, and it's worth noting that this spot is recommended for expert surfers only due to its challenging setup and local crowd.
Given its location near the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, Quarantines can be affected by tidal flows, so keep an eye on 'The Rip' as you plan your sessions. If you’re looking to surf here, make sure you're ready for a bit of a challenge, as it’s not the most welcoming spot for beginner surfers.
