Redondo Beach Breakwater is one of L.A.'s few big-wave surfing spots, located in front of the Chart House restaurant on the north side of King Harbor. The break is known for its fast, walled lefts that break across the front of the King Harbor jetty. This spot requires sizeable swells, particularly from the W, WNW, and SW directions. It tops out with waves ranging from about head-high (2 meters) to up to 20 feet (6 meters). The wave is best with mid-long period swells of 13 seconds or more, and while it can get fun on smaller days, it really lights up when the swell is significant.

The take-off zone is quite powerful, and while you can catch some barrels, there are plenty of closeouts to contend with. The wave breaks primarily over sand, and it’s a left-hander that offers long rides when conditions are right. It’s important to hit this spot at lower tides, as it tends to get tricky with backwash, especially during high tides. The paddling out works best at the rip next to the breakwater. Expect crowds, especially when the swell is larger, and keep in mind that the local vibe can be unforgiving, particularly when it’s more than triple overhead. So if you’re an expert and ready for a challenge, be prepared for some competition in the water.

This spot is mainly good in the autumn, winter, and spring months. Now, when it comes to gear, you'll want your shortboard, gun, or even a skimboard if you're up for it. Just remember that due to the strong currents and the sometimes tricky entry from the break wall, timing is key. Finding the right wave can mean the difference between a fun ride and a tough session, so pay attention to the lineup.
