Rocky Point is a popular surf spot known for its huge, curved reef that can really come alive with the right conditions. It’s mostly sheltered but will start to pop off when a big northwest swell hits the North Track. The location offers some solid views across to Lobos, making it not just a surf spot but a pretty nice place to hang out as well. It used to cater mainly to more experienced surfers chasing massive waves, but these days, you’ll find a mix of beginners and longboarders enjoying it whenever the waves are on.
The waves here can reach waist high to overhead (roughly 1 to 2.5 meters), with a fast, hollow right that can definitely draw a crowd. You'll also find longer lefts that wall up nicely. Rocky Point handles swell sizes from around 1 meter to 2.5 meters, depending on the conditions. It’s a reef break that works best on low to mid tides, and it generally prefers winds coming from the south to southwest. With a huge area of reef for the waves to break over, paddling can be a bit challenging, especially on the left when the swells are big.
Access is pretty straightforward, with street parking available nearby, but it’s best not to leave anything valuable in your car. The paddle out is made easier by the deep channel, but keep an eye out for the rocks on the inside and be prepared for some company on busy days. The local vibe tends to be relaxed, but it can definitely get crowded when the surf is good. Autumn and winter are the prime seasons to catch the best waves here, so plan accordingly!
