Ruapuke surf guide

Ruapuke is a surf spot located just south of Raglan on the west coast of Waikato. It's known to be a summer alternative for surfers looking to escape the crowds of Raglan's busier beaches. The area features a rugged, wild environment with a basic campground, but you'll need to come prepared as there are no other facilities along the 8km stretch.

This spot works best with south-west to north-west swell and can handle sizes starting from about 0.6 meters (2 feet). Waves break over sand and generally come in both left and right directions. The north end tends to clean up nicely with a north-east wind, but be cautious as it can get blown out at times. The Toreparu Stream can create some interesting bars at the south end during higher tides. Mid to high tides are preferable for the best surfing experience. Keep in mind that it can be challenging, especially when the swell gets overhead, as there are vicious rips at that size. This spot is ideal for intermediate surfers.

When you're heading to Ruapuke, you'll be navigating via Whatawhata Road State Highway 23. After turning onto Te Mata Road, you’ll wind your way through a series of turns leading you to the beach. It’s a bit of a trek, but the unspoiled nature of the area makes it worthwhile. Just remember, it's pretty basic around here, so come prepared for a day in the wild.
