Runswick Bay surf guide

Runswick Bay is a surf spot located on the east side of the bay. It's not the most crowded place as it’s rarely surfed, but when the conditions are right, it can offer some decent waves. The beach is accessed down a steep hill, and there's a car park at the bottom. There's also a cafe in the village nearby, making it a nice spot to grab something to eat after a session.

The surfing here is primarily focused on the reef breaks. You'll find fast, walling right-handers that come off an inner, middle, and outer reef. The best chances for surf happen when the swell comes from the north or southeast, with optimal swell sizes around 3ft (1 meter). It’s a spot where you'll want to keep an eye on the tides, as it works well at low, mid, and high tide. It's mostly suited for expert surfers looking for a bit of a challenge. The waves break over rock ledges, and while there’s a small beach break in front of the car park, the more interesting action can be found further out. On days when the main spots are too big and messy, Runswick Bay might be worth checking out.

Since it’s a bit out of the way, you’ll likely find yourself in a quieter surf session. Be aware that the left reef, known as the Cobble Dump, can get sketchy, so it’s best to avoid it if you’re not comfortable with more challenging conditions. Make sure to check the wind direction, as a southwest wind tends to be the best for this location.
