Salani Left surf guide

Salani Left is a surf spot located on the south coast of Samoa, known for its left-hand waves. To reach the wave, surfers typically take a short 5-minute boat ride. The spot is less crowded compared to others in the area, which can make for a more enjoyable session. The local vibe is friendly, and you'll likely find fellow surfers who are respectful and easy to get along with.

This spot works best with a south-east swell and can handle sizes from knee-high to double overhead (about 0.9m to 6m). The wave throws fast, spitting barrels over a live coral reef, but be aware that it can be quite shallow in places. The ideal conditions for surfing here are with the wind from the northeast and mid to high tides. It's important to note that this wave is mostly suited for more experienced surfers due to its fickleness and the need for good onboard speed and line choice. Compared to the right, it’s less tolerant of tide changes and can be inconsistent, so picking the right day is key.

While Salani Left can produce some great waves, it requires the right conditions to shine, meaning it needs to check a lot of boxes regarding swell and wind. The paddling is generally manageable, but can become a workout when the swell is pumping. Watch out for the reef, as it can catch you off guard if you’re not careful. Surfboards preferred here are usually shortboards, suited to the type of waves that break over the reef.
