More about Salsipuedes surfspot

Salsipuedes, the legendary right pointbreak, will soon be a retirement haven of 2,680 residences, and public road access is history since 2007. Having a boat is now the only way to enjoy the inconsistent, fast peeling rights at the point or the reef peak facing the ex-campground.

General: Salsipuedes is arguably Northern Baja's best pointbreak and a transcendental surfing experience. There are two separate and unique breaks that make up Salsipuedes. The reef, which is up around the top of the point, is an A-frame that offers bowly lefts and longer, yet sectiony, rights on W-to-NW swells up to a few feet overhead. (SW swells don't really get into Salsipuedes with any size.) Around the bend going south is the main attraction. In this righthander's most brilliant moments, it has been called the thickest, meanest, most hollow pointbreak on the North American West Coast. The catch is that such oceanic excellence is indeed quite rare. Swell must wrap almost 90 degrees into the bay, then keep up steam for a good three miles before reaching the point on the inside bayshore. Such powerful refraction comes only on the heels of a huge W-NW winter groundswell, and must be met by an extremely low tide. Tides: Low. Size: Shoulder high to triple overhead Wind: N (the magic of the point is that it's protected from the predominant afternoon onshore NW wind) Swell: W, NW (The more west, the better) Bottom: Rock and sand. Paddling: Medium at the reef, can be heavy at the point on a big day. Spot Rating: Reef is fun, point can be world class.

Reef: beginner to advanced; Point: intermediate to advanced

Difficult, boat in best option.

November to March

Crowd Factor: Yep. Especially when the point is on -- SoCal's finest come down to break boards and get their photo taken. Local Vibe: No real locals due to the difficult access.

Clean

Shallow rock sections; getting skunked after enduring a lengthy boat trip.
