Salybia Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Salybia Bay is a reef break on the northern tip of Trinidad, and it earns its reputation as the island's mini G-land. The wave runs both ways over a moss-covered rock reef, and depending on swell direction there can be a good right on offer alongside the left. When a proper swell arrives, the whole reef lights up, outside and inside. It takes a swell to get going, but it delivers a genuinely good wave when it does.

When It Works

The reef draws swell from west-northwest through north to east-northeast, and it is usable from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Autumn and winter are the seasons to watch, with late fall through early spring the most consistent stretch and late summer into fall bringing the occasional tropical cyclone swell. Expect the paddle to get progressively more demanding as the size climbs.

Wind and Tide

Look for south-southwest offshore wind, with a workable window running from south to west-southwest. The reef can work through most of the tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

This one suits intermediate and expert surfers on a shortboard. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it turns on, and a crowd that keeps to itself a little. The vibe is mellow, so keep it that way.
