San Agustin surf guide

If you've just landed at the Huatulco airport and want to soak up the laid-back vibe of Mexico's southern Pacific Coast, San Agustin is just a short trip away. It’s located on the western edge of Parque Nacional Huatulco and is a bit bumpy to access, but it's worth it to check out this beautiful stretch of coast focused on sustainable tourism. The area features a few bays offering a mix of waves, and while not all of them are prime, San Agustin Bay stands out as one of the better options around. It boasts a wide, white-sand beach and several peaks, especially fun to ride when a solid south swell rolls in.

The surf here can be hit or miss. It handles swell sizes from about 0.6 meters (2ft) to 3.6 meters (12ft), with the best conditions typically found when there’s a south to southeast swell. You’ll find both left and right-breaking waves on the beach here, and the bottom is sandy. It’s suitable for beginners trying their luck, as well as more experienced surfers looking for something mellow. The waves work pretty well at low to mid tide levels, and the preferred wind directions are from the north, making it a decent choice when the conditions align. Keep in mind that when it’s not the right swell, the waves can get closed out.

Access to San Agustin is close to the airport, which is a plus. The crowd factor here is usually mellow, as many surfers are just tourists looking to learn. This spot retains a relaxed vibe, but you still need to watch out and stay aware when you're in the water, as turning your back on the ocean can lead to surprises. April through November tends to be the active surf season here, so plan your trip accordingly.
