Overview
Sand Key is a sandy beach break that throws a decent right on the south side of an inlet, with Clearwater Beach to the north and Belleair Beach to the south. It is the default post-frontal spot for the northern Pinellas County area, pulling surfers from around the Tampa Bay region when a cold front clears through. The wave is fairly modest, so expect a fun session rather than a world-class one.
When It Works
The spot comes alive on a northwest windswell behind a cold front. It draws swell from northwest through north to west-southwest (NW-N-WSW), with a northwest direction the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.2 m / 4 ft, roughly thigh- to head-high on the better days. The season runs through autumn, winter, and spring, with hurricane swells adding to the mix. Paddling out is easy most days, though the bigger windswell days can be more of a workout.
Wind and Tide
Look for east-northeast (ENE) offshore wind to clean things up, while a little onshore actually helps generate the surf in the first place. The workable wind window runs from north through east to south-southeast (N-E-SSE). It surfs best on mid to high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Sand Key suits everyone from beginners to experienced surfers, and it takes anything from a shortboard to a funboard, longboard, or skimboard. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, especially on post-frontal northwest windswell, though there is plenty of room to spread out. The atmosphere can feel a touch reserved, but the local vibe is friendly. Watch for stingrays both here and on Clearwater Beach, so shuffle your feet on the way out.
Access
Access is public. The water is usually clean outside of the occasional red tide outbreak.
