Sandy Key is located at the Sandy Key Condominiums, just west of Johnson's Beach. It's a spot that might not draw surfers from afar, but it serves its purpose for locals. There are some pilings left from an old pier that may help with forming the sandbar. There’s a decent outside peak and a mid-break that can be surfed throughout the year. To get there, turn left off State Road 292 and take a right on Sandy Key Drive, where you can park along the road.

The surf here ranges from about 2 to 4 feet (0.6 to 1.2 meters) and usually offers pretty rideable conditions. You can expect both right and left waves breaking over a sandy bottom. The preferred wind directions are from the northwest to northeast, and the best time to surf is around mid to high tide. Although it's manageable for beginners, intermediate and expert surfers will find some fun here too. It’s not the most epic spot, but it can get the job done, especially during the fall to spring season when hurricane swells hit.

This beach vibe is generally mellow, but it can get normal to heavy crowds, especially on the weekends. Given that it's on the Emerald Coast, the clear blue water adds a nice touch to your surfing experience. Just keep in mind the usual sea life hazards like sharks and jellyfish. If you plan to go, a shortboard, fish, funboard, or longboard will work fine here.
