Santa Clara Rivermouth surf guide

Santa Clara Rivermouth is a unique surf spot located in California. It’s known for its rivermouth break that can offer some decent waves when the conditions align. While the spot gets crowded, surfers come here for good reason, as it can produce quality surf. Access is pretty straightforward from the south end of Spinnaker Drive, making it easy to get to for a session.

This place works best with a west swell and can also handle swells coming from the south and northwest. The waves tend to break over sand, creating lefts and rights that can be fun to ride. You can catch waves here ranging from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) up to several feet overhead, and it’s known for its deep, makeable tubes. The optimal tide heights for a good surf are low, mid, or high, and it’s best to surf here with a northeast wind. It’s a spot that works well for intermediate surfers looking for a challenge.

Occasionally, after heavy rains, you might see perfect sandbars, sometimes referred to as the Star Bar, which can create quality A-frame peaks and long, fast walls. Just keep in mind that with its popularity comes some localism, so be prepared for a bit of competition in the lineup.
