Santa Marina surf guide

Santa Marina is a surf spot located off the rocky isle near Playa de Somo, just east of Santander. This area is known for its beautiful scenery and a decent wave that attracts surfers looking for a bit of adventure. The beach itself is a long stretch of sand, but the highlight is definitely the right-hand point break that wraps around the island, providing some solid surf at the right conditions.

The waves at Santa Marina typically kick in when the swell hits 6ft to 12ft (about 2 to 4 meters). The ideal swell comes from the Northwest, but you can also catch decent conditions with swells coming from the West and North. This spot is mostly suited for expert surfers due to the challenging take-offs and the long paddle out. The best time to surf here is around mid to high tide, especially when the wind is blowing from the east. The waves break over an uneven reef, creating powerful right-handers that can pack a punch. Falling on the take-off can be pretty risky, especially at lower tides, so itโ€™s best to keep an eye on the conditions.

While itโ€™s a fantastic place to surf, be prepared for a big local crew. The vibe can be a bit competitive, so it's good to be respectful in the lineup. The access is mainly through a long paddle, so you'll want to be ready for a workout getting out to the waves. This spot is primarily surfed during the autumn and winter months, making it a seasonal favorite for those looking to chase some good barrels.
