Overview
Santa Marina is a world-class right-hand reefbreak off Isla de Santa Marina, near the eastern end of Playa de Somo. It wraps along the island’s western fringe with huge walls, open faces, and barrel sections over an uneven reef with sand and rocks.
It gets very good, but it is a serious wave with heavy hold-downs and rocks in the white water.
When It Works
Santa Marina works from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. It favors swell from west to north, with northwest as the optimal swell direction.
The main season is autumn and winter, roughly September to February. The best days are rare, usually needing a large swell and the right wind, and may only happen a few times a year.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is east. A northeast wind can also suit the rare large-swell setup.
Mid to high tide is the better window, and a rising tide is better. The wave can be OK on all tides, but low tide puts dangerous rocks in front of the take-off.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only spot. Shortboards and guns are the board types listed for it.
The lineup is busy, with a large local crew and a competitive feel, so keep things respectful and low-key.
Access
Access means a long paddle, and it is a workout just getting out to the wave.
There are no facilities at the spot, though there is camping nearby and the village of Loredo is fairly close. Parking is free on the roadside, but it can be difficult when the wave is on. Possible car crime has been noted. Some pollution can come from nearby Santander.
