Santo Tomas surf guide

Santo Tomas is a surf spot located just south of Ensenada. To get there, you’ll need to navigate some dirt trails, as the highway veers away from the coast. This spot offers some protection from the wind and is known for its rights at the south-facing point, along with a rocky beach break and a rivermouth. The surrounding area has camping and accommodation options for those looking to stay a bit longer.

This surf spot works best with a west swell, but it can also handle south and northwest swells. You can expect waves that comfortably reach about 3 feet (around 0.9 meters), breaking over uneven reef. The point offers right waves, which are quite appealing, especially when the wind is coming from the north. It’s a decent place for intermediate surfers, as it can handle a variety of tide heights—low, mid, or high—giving you plenty of options for a good session.

If you’re planning to visit, keep in mind that a 4WD vehicle is recommended for access. The kelp in the area often helps to keep the water nice and glassy, making for a more enjoyable surf experience. Just follow the signs for La Bocana or Punta China to find your way.
