More about Schooner Gulch-Moat Creek surfspot

About three miles south of Point Arena is the public access to Moat Creek, a joint project of the Surfrider Foundation and the State Coastal Conservancy.A very short walk from the dirt parking lot will lead you to a small, subdued reef that works best during clean SW swells. The place is sheltered from prevailing NW winds, so Moat is a good bet during the springtime. It’s a mushy peak, good up to about head high, with lots of seaweed and rock obstacles during low tide. The beach itself is very small, so don’t expect to do much sunbathing if you’re coming here at high tide; some cool tidepools emerge at low. Schooner Gulch State Beach is a rocky beachbreak that’s only surfable when small and clean; it’s a state owned pocket beach in front of a shallow, wooded canyon. Park along Hwy 1 at the confluence of Schooner Gulch Road and walk down by the bridge. Rarely crowded.
