Scorpion Bay surf guide

Scorpion Bay is a well-known surf spot located in San Juanico, Mexico. This area is famous for its long, peeling right-hand point breaks that can link up if the conditions are right. To get the best waves, you'll want to pay attention to the swell, which needs to come from the South to West to really work in this deep bay. It’s also worth noting that the spot has become popular among surfers, so expect some crowds, especially during peak season.

The surf here can be fun and offers rides that can stretch up to 2 km when the swell is big enough. It handles swell sizes of around 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) and is best with a southwest swell direction. Surfing is best for intermediate surfers since the waves break over boulders and sand, creating interesting conditions. The preferable wind direction is from the Northwest, and you'll get the most consistency during low to mid tides. If you're looking for more sheltered spots, the first three points inside the bay tend to have better wind protection during the afternoons.

Getting to Scorpion Bay requires some effort, as it's about a 14-hour drive from the US border, and it's advisable to have a 4x4 vehicle for the journey. There’s paid parking and camping available up on the bluffs overlooking the waves, but you’ll need to be prepared for some downsides, like shallow waters when the swell is small, and the occasional grumpy expats. Keep in mind that Scorpion Bay can also have long flat spells, and despite its appeal, camping can get pretty pricey with no additional services around. Lastly, watch out for the local scorpions!
