Scott Creek surf guide

Scott Creek is a beach break that offers a nice place for surfers, with the main reef break located to the north where the highway rises. This spot has surfable waves ranging from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) to an impressive 20 feet (6 meters), mostly during the winter months. The area can get big and challenging, and if you're not careful, the surf can really take you for a ride. Parking is pretty easy along the highway, but keep an eye out for traffic when you’re getting in and out.

The surf here tends to work best with a northwest swell, although it can also handle swells from the south and northwest. Generally, the waves break over a mix of rock and sand, with the right reef offering some solid rides. You can expect waves to show up during low, mid, and high tides. Ideal conditions are usually when the wind is coming from the east, providing clean faces. The beach also has a fair amount of paddling involved, especially when the surf gets overhead, so make sure you’ve got your stamina ready. The spot can be quite good when everything lines up, but sometimes it can get blown out if the wind picks up.

Be aware that Scott Creek does have some notable hazards. There’s the presence of bull kelp, which can snag your board, and the water can be cold. There’s also a reputation for sharks in the area, so keep that in mind while you’re surfing. The vibe can vary from local to busy, so it’s a good idea to be respectful if there’s a crowd out. Overall, the conditions here draw a mix of intermediate surfers, and the spot is suitable for different types of boards, whether you're using a shortboard, funboard, gun, or even kiteboard.
