Overview
Serenade is a stunning left-hand reef break, named after a pioneering boat, and it is the wave most overland travellers come here to ride. The take-off is properly ledgy, dropping you straight into an angular barrel section that regularly slams shut. Get through that and it opens into smooth walls of variable speed, mixed with clean tapered shoulders. The wide section peaks up and runs off down the reef, leaving plenty of room for lip-tapping and roundhouses. On smaller swells the two sections stay distinctly separate.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from north through east, with northeast (NE) swell the best match. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Consistency is one of Serenade's real strengths, and it breaks almost every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. Tide is rarely the thing that stops you here, as the wave breaks on all tides, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it works. The reef itself is fairly benign, but it gets sketchy on the inside shut-down section, close to the tall, jungled shoreline.
Access
Getting out there takes some effort. Make the 40-minute walk from Sopi, then paddle 10 minutes across the bay. If you are on a charter, you can jump off at the mooring reef behind the break, though that angle makes the size hard to read, as the waves are almost backless from behind.
