Shark Pit - Marin surf guide
Surf: Way offshore, at the mouth of Tomales Bay is Shark Pit, an epic left-hand barrel which peels over a sandbar triangulated by the rivermouth. On W-NW swells and SE-E winds, it will start breaking at around headhigh and keep pumping to triple that. Must be incoming tide to avoid Mundaka-esque seaward currents and distance from shore means a boat would be handy, especially if the resident whites show up. The best left in Northern California on it's day, which isn't very often. Experts only with the ability to ignore the Jaws theme playing inside one's head.
Environment: Cannot be stressed enough how dangerous these waters are. An attack takes place on a surfer or diver every 2 years in this area, which is noted as a breeding ground for great white sharks.
