Shark Pit - Marin surf guide

Shark Pit is located way offshore at the mouth of Tomales Bay in Marin. It's known for its powerful left-hand waves that can deliver epic barrels. The spot works best with W-NW swells and SE-E winds, but you need to time it right as conditions can vary quite a bit. The distance from shore means that getting to the breaks might require a boat, especially since the area is famous for its resident great whites. This spot is one of the best left-hand waves in Northern California, but it doesn't happen often, so be prepared for some waiting around.

The surf really starts to kick in when the swell hits around 6 feet (about 1.8 meters). It can go all the way up to triple that size under the right conditions. The waves break over sand and can be pretty consistent with a nice left peel, especially on incoming tides. The ideal swell direction is Northwest, but it can also handle swells coming from the West, making it versatile for onlookers. However, you should be an expert if you decide to paddle out here, as the powerful current and occasional big sets are not for beginners.

When youโ€™re planning a trip, keep in mind that the best time to surf is during low, mid, or high tide, depending on the swell and wind conditions. The preferred wind direction is Southeast for optimal conditions. Just be aware that this area is a breeding ground for great whites, so it's crucial to keep your wits about you. Enjoy the ride, but remember to stay safe out there.
