Shell Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Shell Beach is a pair of reef peaks tucked into San Luis Obispo County, north of Pismo Beach and south of Avila Beach. It breaks over rock and, with a little more exposure than nearby Avila, tends to be the more consistent of the two. The scenery is a big part of the draw here, a genuinely pretty slice of Central California coast.

When It Works

The reef draws swell from south to west (S-W) and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Most of the time the peaks are mushy and forgiving, but as a proper swell fills in the quality picks up and the sharper local crew get on it. It does struggle as it grows, tending to close out on the bigger days, so the right mix of swell and tide is what makes it. Autumn is the prime window.

Wind and Tide

Look for north-northeast (NNE) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from north-northwest to east-northeast (NNW-ENE). Shell Beach also picks up some shelter from northwest winds, so it doesn't blow out as quickly as more exposed spots nearby. It likes low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

There's room for everyone here, from beginners on the softer days through to experts when it turns on, and it suits everything from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, with a somewhat reserved feel in the water.

Access

Getting in is easy: grab street parking in Avila and walk down to the beach.
