Shipwreck Bay surf guide

Shipwreck Bay, often referred to as Wreck Bay or Shippies, is a well-known surf spot that attracts many surfers looking for a fun day on the waves. Located conveniently close to the car park and camping areas, it's super accessible, which does mean it can get crowded at times. The bay is nicely angled to catch the SouthWest swell without being too blown out by the wind, making it a popular choice for all levels of surfers.

The wave here is a left-hand point break that rides over sand, making it easier to navigate for beginners and those just looking to improve their skills. Shipwreck Bay handles swell sizes starting from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can take on SouthWest and West swells well. The ideal conditions happen with a SouthWest wind and can be surfed at low, mid, or high tide. While it might not be as famous as some other spots like Raglan, it still offers solid peelers, allowing for a fun and enjoyable ride.

Because it’s the closest wave to the parking area, be prepared for a bit of a crowd, especially on good days. The rip can play a part in your session, so it’s good to be aware of it. Overall, Shipwreck Bay is a reliable spot to catch some waves, whether you’re looking to push your limits or just enjoy a mellow session.
