Silverbacks surf guide

Silverbacks is a surf spot located around a 20-minute boat ride from town. This spot is known for its reputation as Bocas' big wave location, making it a must-visit for serious surfers. It's the only right-hand reef break in the area, and although it might not be suitable for everyone, those who appreciate the challenge will find it worthwhile. Be prepared, as the conditions can get quite intense, especially during the winter months.

This spot really comes alive with north-east swell, but it can also handle waves coming from the north-west and east. Silverbacks can handle swell sizes up to 8 feet (about 2.4 meters) and breaks over an uneven reef. The waves are short but can pack a punch, making them great for experienced surfers who are comfortable with air drops. The ideal wind direction is from the south-west, and you can surf it at low, mid, or high tide, depending on what you're looking for. Just keep in mind that this break is definitely for expert surfers only, as the wave can be punishing to those who aren't ready for it.

When heading out to Silverbacks, it's a good idea to bring longer boards and maybe even a backup, since the spot is known for snapping boards easily. The shifting peaks can keep you on your toes, and if you’re not prepared for the powerful hold-downs, it can be a rough ride. Make sure to have your skills dialed in before you tackle this spot!
