Siouville surf guide
Surf: Vauville has 16km of empty beaches that work on any swell coming from the W. From La Crecque right in the northern corner, through Vauville town and the scattered blockhouses of Biville, down to the dunes of Siouville there are plenty of walled up waves and feathering lips in the morning offshores. The best bet along this stretch of coast is Siouville, where the locals compare it to Les Landes when it’s grinding. Can handle a bit of S wind.
Directions: Off D4
Environment: Plenty of good camping on the Contentin peninsula.
Surf: General: This huge arc of westerly facing beach is part of the fickle Channel coastline, while still being open to the consistent Atlantic swells. With its huge tidal range and long flat beach it is a spot that requires very specific conditions to really turn on. Mostly a fun, beginner-friendly beach with loads of room to spread out and enjoy the long rolling waves. However in bigger swells the southern corner, with its sheltered reef, can get good. Also there is a reef in the northern corner called Le Creque which can produce quality walling righthanders.
Tides: Mid to high tide spot.
Size: Waist to head high.
Wind: E
Swell: W
Bottom: Sand with reefs to north and south.
Paddling: Hard paddle out when bigger, dangerous rips also.
Spot Rating: Picturesque bay with fun rolling waves; reefs to the north and south can get good.
Access: There are a number of parking areas close to the beach.
Crowds: Crowd Factor: Pretty quiet, empty in middle of bay.
Local Vibe: Pretty chilled.
Environment: There is a nuclear reprocessing plant close to the northern end of the bay. Greenpeace campaigned to close it down, claiming it pollutes the local beaches, while the processing plant claims it doesn't.
Hazards: Rips and currents due to tides, isolation in middle of bay.
Season: Works all year but best September - November.
